Literally the hotspot on the Coromandel Peninsula

Time: 5 mins

Grade: Easy

Te Puia or more commonly known as Hot Water Beach (just a few kilometres down the road from Hahei) is quite unique. There is a natural hot spring that runs under the sand and at low to mid tide you can dig a hole in the sand and make your own natural hot tub! The water under the sand is really hot so watch your toes. Check the time for the low tide for the best time to start digging.

Things to note:

The hot springs are only accessible at low tide but two hours each side of low tide should be a good time to dig your own spa.

  • Remember to use the toilets at the car parks. There are no toilets on the beach or within close proximity.
  • Please do not eat or drink in the hot pools
  • Pick up any rubbish in the Hot Water Beach area
  • Only swim between the flags if the Hot Water Beach Surf Life Saving Crew Service are on patrol.
