Gold mining history and relics

Time: 30 mins to 4 hours

Grade: Easy

Situated halfway between Waihi and Paeroa the Karangahake Gorge contains a lot of gold mining history and relics. The gorge was once one of the largest and lucrative gold mining areas in New Zealand. Take a torch if you have one to explore the old tunnels. There are a number of walks in this area of varying lengths from 30 minute to 4 hours including the Tunnel Loop walk, the Windows walk and the Owharoa Falls walk to name a few. The gorge is now part of the Hauraki Rail Trail which is a 147km cycle route which can be done in part or over multiple days. Bike hire is available in Paeroa, Waihi, Thames and Te Aroha.

PLEASE Prevent Kauri Die Back Disease Spreading.

After visiting Kauri trees please do the following:

1. Clean all dirt off footwear, hiking pole, tyres and equipment before and after a visit to a Kauri Forest

2. Stay on tracks at all times and away from Kauri roots. Walking and disturbing soil around the roots can spread the disease and damage fine feeder roots.

Please keep our Kauri alive for future generations. Kia Toitu He Kauri.
